Varna, the pearl of the Black Sea: complete tourist guide
A city steeped in history on the Black Sea coast
Founded as Odessos by the Greeks in the 6th century BC, Varna is one of Europe's oldest cities. Its archaeological museum houses the world's oldest processed gold, dating back over 7,000 years, discovered in the Varna Chalcolithic Necropolis. This exceptional treasure attracts thousands of history and archaeology enthusiasts every year.
The Sea Garden, the city's green lung
Primorski Park, also known as the Sea Garden, stretches over 85 hectares along the coastline. It is the oldest and largest landscaped park in the Balkans. It features an aquarium, Bulgaria's only dolphinarium, a zoo, an astronomical observatory and an open-air theatre. The shaded pathways offer a pleasant stroll between the city and the beach, perfect for families and solo travellers alike.
Roman Baths and the Cathedral
The Roman Baths of Odessos rank among the four largest in the Roman Empire and are the biggest Roman structure in Bulgaria. Nearby, the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary impresses with its copper domes and colourful stained-glass windows. The pedestrian centre, starting from Nezavisimost Square with the Belle Epoque facade of the opera house, invites a leisurely walk down to the seafront.
